New Nintendo Console – Confirmed

Previously we reported on a rumor that Nintendo was set to announce the successor to the Wii at this years E3 press event, today that rumor became fact. Nintendo released a brief press release this morning, much like they did last year prior to E3 regarding the rumored at the time 3DS hand held system. In the release, Nintendo said:

“To whom it may concern:

Re: Wii’s successor system

Nintendo Co., Ltd. has decided to launch in 2012 a system to succeed Wii, which the company has sold 86.01 million units on a consolidated shipment basis between its launch in 2006 and the end of March 2011.

We will show a playable model of the new system and announce more specifications at the E3 Expo, which will be held June 7-9, 2011, in Los Angeles.”

The only information that they were forthcoming about is that the new console will launch sometime after April 2012, presumably a fall 2012 launch, and will not include 3D like their newest handheld. Much speculation has been tossed around regarding the specs for the new machine and what the controller will look like, since it is rumored to have a touch screen built in. We will continue to follow any more news leading up to and during E3 this year.
